Learnings from our speaker series on “Advancing Inclusive AI”

By Genevieve Smith and Ishita Rustagi

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is advancing rapidly, impacting all areas of our lives. AI is also increasingly being used for “social good”, tackling issues spanning climate change, inequality, financial inclusion, and healthcare. This is exciting, and we must continue exploring how this technology can solve some of the world’s toughest issues. At the same time, it is important to ensure these systems are built and managed in ways that do not inadvertently perpetuate inequities in our society. That is, it is important to work towards ‘inclusive AI’.

The concept of inclusive AI is twofold. It includes having inclusive…

On October 29, 2020 the Science of Diversity & Inclusion Initiative (SODI) partnered with the Center for Equity, Gender, and Leadership (EGAL), to host their second virtual convening of the year. The goal? To bring together behavioral scientists and business leaders in diversity, equity, and inclusion to advance racial equity in the workplace.

On November 18, 2020, The Berkeley Haas Center for Equity, Gender, and Leadership (EGAL), theBoardlist, and Berkeley Haas Development and Alumni Relations hosted a fireside chat on best practices for board diversity. The discussion featured Shannon Gordon, theBoardlist CEO, and Elena Gomez, CFO at Zendesk. I can honestly say that Dr. Kellie McElhaney’s Equity Fluent Leadership (EFL) class has been the highlight of my Berkeley experience thus far. Through EFL, I’ve developed my active allyship (or I should say, “co-conspiracy”) strategy, and have come away with a whole new sense of purpose. Funny thing is, I wasn’t even supposed to be in the class.

With a career in professional services and a background in data science, you could definitely say I was more analyst than activist. I believed in the principles of fairness and inclusion, and had a vague notion of wanting to be a…

On November 12, 2020, The Berkeley Haas Center for Equity, Gender, and Leadership (EGAL) and the Haas Manbassadors group, an MBA allyship group within Haas’s Women in Leadership (WiL) MBA club, hosted a fireside chat on dual career couples (“DCC”) and COVID-related gender equity issues in the workplace. The discussion featured Jody Sheu, a Haas EWMBA student, and Mary Beth Ferrante, the Founder and CEO of WRK/360. Sheu is the VP of Intersectionality for WiL, a Senior Product Manager at The Men’s Wearhouse and Jos. A Bank, and in a DCC, herself. Ferrante is a mother of two and, prior…

“It’s not good enough to say ‘oh we have a lot of diverse perspectives.’ …What do you do with that? Is the company thriving? Is that diverse perspective being recognized, and seen, and leveraged?” — InaMarie Johnson

InaMarie Johnson’s parents instilled in her the belief that “you belong” and “you are worthy.” On Thursday, October 15th Johnson joined EGAL for the AmpEquity Speaker Series to share how those same lessons have informed her leadership philosophy, which prioritizes diversity and inclusion. In her current role as Chief People & Diversity Officer for Zendesk, Johnson leads the company’s vision for delivering a…

I rarely see or hear from people that look like me (Filipino, queer, non-binary, immigrant) in mainstream media and business. And, I plan to change that!

Since September, I’ve launched the Intersectional Perspectives (IP) podcast, which explores intersectional stories through intimate conversations and personal ideas on events shaping our world. It brings me so much joy when people share with me that IP has helped them through their personal struggles, allowed them to learn new ideas, or laugh at our antics. My podcast has been directly influenced by Professor Kellie McElhaney’s “Equity Fluent Leadership” (EFL) course. …

After hosting two successful in-person case competitions with Zendesk, Berkeley Women in Business (BWIB) and the Center for Equity, Gender, and Leadership (EGAL) teamed up to host our first-ever virtual case competition on September 18th, 2020. With everything going on in the world these past 6 months, diversity, equity, and inclusion is more important than ever before. Recognizing this, Zendesk focused the competition around their new Global, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (GDEI) framework and encouraged participants to come up with several Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) to quantify the framework.

Headquartered in San Francisco, Zendesk is a service-first CRM company…
